Plastic collection drive
Chandor, Cavorim, Guirdolim

Adopting Mahatma Gandhi’s slogan of “Cleanliness is next to Godliness”, the villagers of Chandor, Cavorim and Guirdolim undertook a massive plastic collection drive to commemorate his birth anniversary on 2nd October that left the villages look clean and green.

Initiated by Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott, the plastic collection drive was supported by the Village Panchayats of Chandor-Cavorim and Guirdolim, Parish Youth Chandor, Chandor Club, Guirdolim Club and the Somudais of Chandor Parish and Guirdolim chapel.

The panchayat members took on the task of supervising the collection in their respective wards and co-ordinated with the somudai leader and also the GBE representative given charge of the ward. GBE besides supervising the collection at ward level also co-ordinated the transportation of the collected plastic and its final disposal.

The cleanliness drive began at 8 am with the inhabitants of the two villages, through their somudais, collecting the plastic waste not only from households but also that lying along the roadside, in the drains and in open spaces. Men and women along with children enthusiastically participated in this activity with the children from Miriagirem stealing a march over others as they carried a banner against dumping of plastic waste and also shouted anti-plastic dumping slogans.

Parish Priest Fr. Saude Pereira extended his full support for this endeavour by not only asking the somudais to be involved but also by permitting Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott to address two meetings of the Parish Animation Team and Community Animation Team. GBE members addressed all the 20 somudais of Chandor Parish to educate the villagers on plastic management and also prepare for the plastic collection drive.

Assistant Parish Priest Fr. Damaciano Carvalho led the Parish Youth Chandor in collecting the plastic waste from the Church square and also the area around the cemetery. Chaplain on St. Francis Xavier Chapel at Guirdolim Fr. Jose Gomes activated the somudais from his jurisdiction to join the drive.

With the collection decentralized at ward level, it was over by 11 am and then it was time to collect the plastic kept at strategic places in each ward. In all there were six vehicles criss-crossing the two villages to collect the plastic waste. While two vehicles were sponsored by Chandor Club, one was sponsored by Guirdolim Club and three members of GBE offered their vehicles.

Altogether a little over a truckload of plastic waste was collected which was gathered at the market square and then whisked away to Time Wise Waste Management, a waste management company belonging to Michael Benny da Costa.

The outstanding feature of this plastic collection drive was the participation of so many different stakeholders and also the disposal of the collected plastic on the same day, which was much appreciated by the people.

Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott sincerely thanks Parish Priest Fr. Saude Pereira, Assistant Parish Priest Fr. Damaciano Carvalho, Guirdolim Chaplain Fr.
