GBE members visit aged people
Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott on 5th August 2018 visited the Home for the Aged at Cotta and besides interacting with the 15 inmates they also showed them a Konkani film titled “Chor Pulis” which was enjoyed very much by the spectators. Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott at its annual general body meeting held on 7th July 2018 unanimously elected a new Managing Committee headed by Julio D’Silva as the President. The elections were conducted by Felix Furtado who volunteered to be the Election Commissioner. It may be recalled that Julio D’Silva was the founder general secretary when the Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott was formally registered with the Registrar of Co-operative Societies 10 years ago and served as the general secretary till May 2015. His name was proposed by Michael Pereira and seconded by John D Coutinho. Maria Mascarenhas and Irene Antao were elected as the two vice presidents. People leaving the St Anthony’s Chapel at Cavorim after celebrating the novena mass were stunned to see some people standing with by the road side with their faces covered in plastic bags and carrying beautifully designed and printed posters with messages to preserve and protect environment. This was Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott’s novel way of observing World Environment Day following an idea mooted by ex President John Douglas Coutinho. Incidentally they also planted 25 trees around the periphery of St. Anthony Chapel property. Only flowering trees like Champa and others were planted by around 20 members of Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott. Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott held a cycle expedition on February 25, 2018 in the revenue villages of Chandor, Cavorim and Guirdolim to educate and sensitise people into saying NO to plastic shopping bags. The expedition started at 6:45 am and ended at 9:45 with breakfast at the meeting place. Nine members of GBE undertook the three hour long expedition that commenced from St. Anthony’s Chapel at Cavorim and ended at the St. Francis Xavier’s Chapel at Guirdolim. The cyclists went right up to border of the village with neighbouring Sao Jose de Areal via Doneamoll and then took the asphalted road to Chandor church. Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott organized its annual Christmas Party for senior citizens from the villages of Chandor Cavorim and Guirdolim at the Chandor Club premises Sunday morning where around 170 elders had a good time. Jalin the one man band belted out some great songs to keep the elders entertained the whole time. Besides, he also played the music whenever GBE members Anthony Pereira and Domnick Mendes sang. He also backed participants Jose Salvador Cardoso, Domnick Cardoso, Ida Antao, Maria Joaquina Antao and Annie Gomes when they sang songs.
