It is indeed a matter of pride for all Chandorkars that a co-villager Savio D’Silva has just returned home after captaining the world’s largest vessel afloat in present times in terms of dead weight that is to say its cargo carrying capacity. The ship is the first Very Large Ore Carrier (VLOC) that was built at Daewoo Shipyard in Korea and delivered to Vale Shipping, its Brazilian owners on 31st March 2011. Originally the ship was named “Vale Brasil” but on 3rd July 2014 its name was changed to “Ore Brasil”. The statistics of the ship are: length – 362 mts., width – 65 mts and depth – 30 mts. Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott organized a demonstration of scientific way of disposal of non functioning tube lights without harming the environment or causing nuisance to the public. On 4th September 2014 two demonstrations were held at the Panchayat Offices of Chandor-Cavorim and Guirdolim. A Bombay based company Ecoreco separated the mercury from the tube lights which was collected in a separat4e container which is then scientifically disposed. As for the glass and aluminium parts of the tube lights, they are crushed and stored in a drum which is then separated and accordingly disposed off. While at Chandor Cavorim 320 tube lights were disposed off, at Guirdolim the number of tube lights taken care of was 780. GBE incurred a total expenditure of Rs. 13,750/- for this...

Congratulations to all the students of St. Joseph’s Education Institute, Chandor who passed the Secondary School Certificate Examinations conducted by the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education this year. In all 114 students answered the exams as one girl dropped out at the last moment. Of the 114 students who answered the exams 93 passed thereby giving the school a passing percentage of 81.58 per cent. The breakup of the performance of the students is as follows: 16 passed with distinctions, 23 passed with a First Class, 46 secured a Second Class and 8 got a pass class. Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott (GBE) on 28th May 2014 helped Guirdolim Panchayat clean certain portions of their village of the accumulated garbage therein. The area behind the building housing the Canara Bank, the Monte area, the place around the cemetery and the creek separating Cavorim from Guirdolim where there is a small bridge at present, were cleaned. Ironically, while GBE President John Douglas Coutinho pressed into service his around 27 labourers GBE members were woefully short in numbers and more so members from Guirdolim village.
