GBE helps needy people

Though faced with the hardships of the pandemic and the ensuing norms that prohibit gatherings, Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott continued its work of helping the residents of Chandor, Cavorim and Guirdolim by helping three truly needy people.

What is truly appreciable about this activity is that the entire sum of Rs. One lakh distributed to the needy three was from contributions made by members who have also committed to contribute more so that life is as normal as possible for these persons.

In the first place a cheque for Rs. Fifty thousand was given to a lady from Guirdolim who is undergoing chemotherapy at the moment for cancer of the uterus.

In the second place a cheque of Rs. Twenty Five thousand was presented to Edkar Shirodkar whose hip was crushed at Sawantwadi when he being a mechanic had gone to repair a Goa-Mumbai route bus belonging to a prominent and well know travel company from Goa.

Mr. Shirodkar was the only bread earner for his family that includes a 12 year old son and 11 year old daughter. The travel company he worked for 28 years did not help him or his family in any way except asking him to approach the Employee’s State Insurance with whom they are registered.

Besides GBE has succeeded in finding a person who has agreed to sponsor a hip brace which is expected to cost around Rs. Fifty thousand. With the hip brace he will be able to move around and look out for some job.

GBE also gave an amount of Rs. Twenty Five thousand to a 20 year old Austin Rebello who is a resident of Vasco but has his mother’s sister living in Cavorim. Austin’s is a really sad case as he was crippled at the tender age of 19 by an ambulance driver when the ambulance banged into the bike he was riding right in front of the new District Hospital at Fatorda.

The gruesome accident resulted in Austin’s spine snapping due to which he is totally crippled with no movement absolutely in his body and he lies in bed the whole day cursing his misfortune as he has two younger sisters who have to be cared for since his father succumbed to covid recently.

Austin has been recommended a total body brace which will help him move and the same is estimated to cost around Rs. 5 lakh. However, a doctor from Pune has offered to prepare a hybrid full body brace specially for Austin costing around Rs. 3 lakhs which amount has been offered by another person through GBE.

While having already disbursed Rs. One lakh to  the three and got sponsors to provide braces for Austin and Edkar GBE is also providing a prosthetic estimated to cost nearly Rs. 1.5 lakhs to a person from Cavorim whose leg is amputated.
