Breast Cancer screening done

Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott organized a camp for screening women for breast cancer on 24th September which was held at the Chandor Club premises under the ‘Swasth Mahila Swasth Goa’ project during which 155 ladies were checked up and the good news was that there was not a single suspected case.

The camp was commenced at 9 am and ended at 5 pm and women above the age of 25 were screened for breast cancer which is reported to be the third highest killer of women worldwide and India reporting one-fifth of the total cases in the world. In fact in India, it is said to be the highest killer of women and as per 2020 statistics its incidence is 25.8 per cent. Incidentally, the eldest woman screened at Chandor was aged 80.

Three doctors associated with the Yuvraj Singh Foundation namely Dr. Maria Rodrigues, Dr, Kajal Naik and Dr. Stefny Cardoz screened all the ladies the whole day with a short break for lunch.

GBE member Menino alias Minush arranged for tuna sandwiches as snacks while GBE members who were volunteers went home for lunch in turns to ensure that there was no break in the screening and the doctor were provided lunch at the site itself.

The doctors were given the GBE memento representing the moniker for Chandor residents, namely Reddo along with a letter of appreciation and a flowering plant in a pot. GBE President John Fernandes thanked the doctors for their selfless service and also the members in getting such a large number of women from the village for the camp.

While general secretary Francis Coutinho and former general secretary Alzira Fernandes were the joint project managers, members specially the ladies worked hard as volunteers to make it a great success. The ever ready Minush was running all around while Irene, Maria, Sita, Ezly, Sebastiana were handling the crowd and making them comfortable, besides doing the registration. GBE member Emerson was capturing moments from the camp for posterity.

The tea,The previous day, the above named lady members, worked hard to literally convert the allotted premises of the club into a virtual medical clinic where patients are attended to. Everything was spick and span. The male members also played a significant role and among those who were there as volunteers were President John Fernandes, managing committee members Basil Fernandes and Anthony ereira, former President John Douglas Coutinho, former general secretary Darwin Cardoso, members Gidwan, Francis Peixote, Mickson, Diago, Ligorio, Fiel alias Babazinho, Pobrin Jose Coutinho, Vincy, Miguel, Sandeep and Felix.

The doctors were very pleased with the organization and while thanking GBE said “it was very well organized”. Loud cheers to GBE member Nina for suggesting this project and to all the members who sweated it out to make it a resounding success.
