Guirdolim cleanliness drive

Guirdolim village

Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott (GBE) on 28th May 2014 helped Guirdolim Panchayat clean certain portions of their village of the accumulated garbage therein. The area behind the building housing the Canara Bank, the Monte area, the place around the cemetery and the creek separating Cavorim from Guirdolim where there is a small bridge at present, were cleaned.

Ironically, while GBE President John Douglas Coutinho pressed into service his around 27 labourers GBE members were woefully short in numbers and more so members from Guirdolim village. Only GBE members present were John Douglas, former president Rui da Silva, Benedito Fernandes, Ashley Antao, Menino alias Minush Gomes, Anand Shirodkar, Michael Pereira and Julio D’Silva. Dilip Naik was there for a brief moment.

Bravo to the Guirdolim Panchayat members as six of the seven members participated wholeheartedly in the cleanliness drive. The only exception was the former Sarpanch Milagres Gonsalves who reportedly took the stand that the Panchayat should have done this on its own without taking the help of GBE. Incidentally when the said Mr. Gonsalves was the Sarpanch of the village no cleanliness drive of any nature was undertaken.

GBE volunteers along with the six Panchayat members of Guirdolim Panchayat and the labourers cleaned up the above mentioned areas. Incidentally it was quite a spectacle to see passersby at the creek stop to see what was going on and some even agreeing to come in the evening to purchase the fish that would be caught.

All type of rubbish or rather garbage was found in the creek. It is indeed quite surprising that though we all depend on water for our survival, water is the first thing we tend to pollute with not only our household garbage but even with our excreta as was witnessed in Chandor.

WHEN, OH GOD, WHEN WILL OUR PEOPLE LEARN THE BASIC ETHICS OF LIFE?
