New MLA for Cuncolim 07-March-2012

Cuncolim constituency voters for the third time in history went against the normal trend of voting for the Congress or its erstwhile avatar of United Goans candidate and elected Subhash alias Rajan Naik as its MLA much against expectations and giving a great shock to the establishment.

For the record, in 1977 when the Congress was facing a strong resentment following the emergency, at the Assembly elections held in Goa, Cuncolim elected then Advocate and now retired High Court Justice Ferdino Rebello who was the Janata Party candidate.

Then again in 1994, the United Goans Democratic Party candidate Arecio D’Souza was elected from Cuncolim constituency polling 39.71 per cent of the total votes. However, subsequently Arecio D’Souza joined the Indian National Congress and was elected as MLA once again to represent Cuncolim constituency at the 1999 elections. However, he was defeated in 2002 by the Congress candidate Joaquim Alemao.

Subhash alias Rajan Naik the BJP candidate has been elected from Cuncolim riding not only on the anti-incumbency wave that the Congress faced all over the state, but also capitalizing on the disenchantment with the panchayat members who were backing the sitting MLA and Congress nominee Joaquim Alemao who has faced defeat after winning from this constituency twice.

Mr. Naik is a businessman owning the Prakash Transport which plies buses on different routes in Goa and is a very simple and affable character who managed to capitalize on the anti-Congress and anti-Joaquim wave to create history in the constituency.
