Plastic collection in Guirdolim

Plastic collection in GuirdolimResidents of Guirdolim can now heave of sigh of relief as the Panchayat is in the process of commencing door to door plastic waste collection very soon.

Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott (GBE) has been working in the two villages of Chandor-Cavorim and Guirdolim for the last more than five years on garbage management. Probably in recognition of their good work, GBE President John Douglas Coutinho was appointed on the Garbage Management Committee of Chandor-Cavorim Village Panchayat and subsequently elected its chairman.

It was primarily due to his persistence and tenacity that the Chandor-Cavorim Village Panchayat set in place a mechanism wherein plastic garbage is now collected from the households in Chandor-Cavorim and also from the roadside thus making the village look clean and beautiful.

However, the neighbouring village Guirdolim continued to look ugly with waste and more particularly plastic waste strewn all over more particularly at junctions and public places.

In the month of May 2014 the Guirdolim Village Panchayat along with GBE undertook a cleanliness drive at a few select places and the about of garbage dumped was shocking and appalling.

Guirdolim Sarpanch Sonia Dias initiated the process at this cleanliness drive and GBE offered to sponsor two trolleys fitted to bicycles – similar to the ones given to Chandor-Cavorim Panchayat – to collect the plastic waste from households provided the Panchayat built a cage to store the collected plastic.

The Guirdolim Panchayat has now identified the place where the cage will be built and has also found a sponsor for the cage. GBE has already brought the trolleys and cycles and very soon the scheme will be launched in Guirdolim.
