GBE Celebrates Vanmahotsav
Having successfully planted saplings in the past which have now grown into sturdy trees, Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott this year undertook an ambitious project of planting 500 saplings as part of Vanmahotsav celebrations in the twin villages of Chandor-Cavorim and Guirdolim. The programme that was launched on 6th July 2022 had the Range Forest Officer Narayan Vaingankar and Chandor Parish Priest Fr. Jean Ruby da Cruz Fernandes as the joint chief guests. Forest Guards of the Goa Forest Department, Shantesh Naik, Ashok Naik and Santosh Naik were also present. Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott held their annual ladainh or litany after a two year gap on 28th May 2022 at 5 pm. The gap was due to the pandemic. As against the normal practice of having the litany at the Cross on top of the hillock at Ghottmorod, this year it was held at the Cross at the ground level. While some members expressed their inability to climb the hillock, the pre monsoon showers also forced a change in the venue which resulted in a record 43 participants including some local residents. Anthony Pereira as usual led the singing ably backed by Miguel Mascarenhas. Cypriano Fernandes was on the guitar and Venon Andrade on snare better known as ‘reng teng’ colloquially. Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott organised a football coaching camp for children aged below 14 years from the twin villages of Chandor-Cavorim and Guirdolim. In all 55 children were trained in the game that is a favourite amongst Goans. These included 44 boys and 11 girls and in future one can expect an all ladies football team from here. The children were coached by four licensed coaches namely Agostine Antao who is holding ‘A’ license, Prajot Shirodkar having ‘C’ license and Avelino Dias having ‘D’ license and Remedian Noronha having ‘D’ license specially to focus on the girls undergoing training. Though faced with the hardships of the pandemic and the ensuing norms that prohibit gatherings, Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott continued its work of helping the residents of Chandor, Cavorim and Guirdolim by helping three truly needy people. What is truly appreciable about this activity is that the entire sum of Rs. One lakh distributed to the needy three was from contributions made by members who have also committed to contribute more so that life is as normal as possible for these persons. In the first place a cheque for Rs. Fifty thousand was given to a lady from Guirdolim who is undergoing chemotherapy at the moment for cancer of the uterus. In the second place a cheque of Rs. After a sabbatical last year due to the pandemic Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott held a Christmas party for senior citizens on 19th December and for the first time it was held at Mushroom Garden, Guirdolim. The 233 senior citizens enjoyed it very much thanks to the entertainment arranged by Anthony Pereira. While Jalin provided the music on keyboards, GBE members Domingos Cardoso, William alias Willy Mendes, Lindarifa and Domnic Mendes sang songs. In fact Domnic, Anthony Pereira and Willy even sang a trio at the party competed by Jaret da Silva. Some senior citizens led by Doming from Guirdolim also sang songs. Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott in association with Chandor Seamen’s Association organized a blood donation camp at Chandor today where 29 pints of blood were collected while 11 potential donors were rejected. Dr Ravin Rego of the Hospicio Blood Bank who led the team said the blood donation camp has come at the right moment as presently the blood bank was in dire need of blood and also applauded the organizers for getting such a high number of donors. Various reasons were attributed to the persons who could not donate blood with most of them rejected for low haemoglobin count while there was one case of a boy having very high haemoglobin count.
