Tailoring Classes by GBE
Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott in collaboration with Rotary Club of Cuncolim started “tailoring, cutting & embroidery” classes in Chandor wherein 16 ladies from the village have enrolled for the six month course. This unique project of the Rotary Club of Cuncolim was kick started with the money collected by its member Dr. Jorson Fernandes who refused to accept any flowers or mementoes during his tenure as District Governor of Rotary Club and instead kept a box for donation. Rotary Club of Waynesborco in Brazil joined hands with Rotary Club of Cuncolim to be its international partner to launch this programme under which 200 people will be trained in tailoring, cutting and embroidery and will be provided with free sewing machines. Salvador Afonso’s khell “Ugdasak” won the first prize at the Traditional Carnival Khell Competition organized by Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott at Chandor on the three days of Carnival. In all there were eight khells presented. While “Portuguese Passport” presented by Sansil from Benaulim bagged the second place, the third prize went to Victor de Fatorpa’s “Xezari”. The competition organized in collaboration with Directorate of Art and Culture was much appreciated by the spectators who packed the multipurpose hall at Cavorim during the performances. The contest was judged by noted tiatrist Anil Kumar who hails from Chandor, along with Remmy Furtado and Philip Fijardo. In all 46 persons joined the picnic which was held at Palolem beach where President John Douglas Coutinho once again very graciously offered the deck of his restaurant for GBE. Although the arrival at Palolem was delayed due to the detour that had to be taken in view of a major accident along the National Highway at Karmal Ghat, all had a good time and the picnic was truly a grand success. As usual, Anthony Pereira and Domnic Mendes led the Konkani singing group and they were quite ably supported by Alzira Fernandes, Maria Mascarenhas and Suzie Pereira. Ms. Velveta Ilario from Sailabhat, Molla was provided with a specially designed wheel chair by Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott. The special chair provided by Rotary International was further modified by GBE to suit Velveta’s special needs. Velveta is suffering from muscular dystrophy due to which she cannot sit or stand and is always lying. He mother carries her wherever she has to be taken and it is indeed quite an arduous task given the fact that the girl is now in her late teens. Rotary International District Governor Dr. Jorson Fernandes who saw the child’s plight was quite moved by it and ensured that a chair was specially designed for her so that she could lie prone on it. Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott paid a visit to Daddy’s Home a house dedicated to teaching the differently abled children. Every year during the Lenten period Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott remembers some section of the specially blessed and this year it was Daddy’s Home. The one-and-a-half hour spent at Daddy’s Home with the nearly 90 students of varying ages was truly an eye opener. The enthusiasm of the children was infectious to say the least. Although GBE had planned an entertainment programme, it had to be shelved to give in to the demand of the children who participated with full gusto.
