Village cleaned for monsoons
In keeping with its commitment to cleanliness particularly to keep the village clean, Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott undertook its regular pre-monsoon cleaning of the village. All the waste littering the roadsides of the village and also the prominent open spaces by the road sides were cleaned by special labourers who were supervised by GBE members. The workers slogged it out in the blazing heat for eight days from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, with a break for lunch and some refreshments in between of course, to prepare the village for the monsoon showers. This herculean effort resulted in collecting 60 big black bags of garbage which were then transported to be disposed off scientifically as prescribed by the Goa State Waste Management Corporation. In keeping with the Lenten spirit of cleansing of the soul for the resurrection of Jesus Christ, Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott (GBE) cleaned the village of all the garbage strewn by the roadside so that people get to see cleanliness as they rejoiced in the Lord’s resurrection. Three labourers bore the blazing sun for 9 days to collect plastic, paper and other waste strewn by the roadsides of Chandor-Cavorim and the area around the Church leading right up to Monte in Guirdolim. International Women’s Day was celebrated in an unique manner on 8th March where the lady members along with kith and kin, meaning mothers, wives and daughters of other members, were felicitated at a very touching and memorable function. The programme began with President John Fernandes welcoming the 42 honourable female guests gathered. He also thanked all at the end of the programme. As against the normal trend of female members actively participating in preparing for any GBE programme, this time it was the male members who made all the arrangements. Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott visited 19 sick and elderly residents of the twin villages of Guirdolim and Chandor-Cavorim in the month of February. On Sunday, 4th February they visited 11 houses in Villa Formosa and were quite taken aback to note that five of the elderly persons live alone with only a maid coming everyday and attending to their needs. But, it was heartening to note that four of the elderly persons are looked after by their daughters, while two are looked after by their spouses. The Annual General Body Meeting of Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott was held on 27th January from 6:55 pm onwards with 53 members participating. The meeting was held on the manicured lawns of founder member John Douglas Coutinho adjacent to the usual GBE meeting room. President John Fernandes in his brief welcome address appreciated the presence of founder President Rui da Silva who was present despite his health issues. Ganv Bhavancho Ekvott held its flagship programme, the Christmas Party for Senior Citizens on 19th December 2023 at the spacious hall of Chandor Club premises which was a great success thanks to the hard work put in by Project Managers Alzira Pereira and Vita Pereira. This was the 15th year this project was held and had a record of around 300 senior citizens enjoying the Christmas spirit. Initially, this party used to be held in the open space behind the Chandor Church in the school premises. It was truly a fun time as there were games in which those gathered participated enthusiastically.
